Holiday Booking Hacks: Tips for Saving Money, Packing Smart and Travelling Stress-Free

A great holiday doesn't start when you arrive at the airport.

It starts with the planning.

A little preparation can save you money, reduce stress and help avoid those "I wish I'd thought of that before we left" moments.

Whether you're planning a luxury escape, a family holiday or a quick city break, here are our favourite holiday booking tips.

1. Book Flights at the Right Time

There isn't a magic day that guarantees the cheapest flights, but timing does matter.

As a general rule:

  • European flights are often best booked 2–6 months in advance

  • Long-haul flights are usually best booked 4–8 months ahead

  • School holiday flights should be booked as early as possible

  • Avoid leaving it until the last minute unless you're flexible

If your dates aren't fixed, use flexible date searches to compare prices across a week or month. A one-day difference can sometimes save hundreds of pounds.

2. Set Price Alerts

Don't spend weeks checking flight prices manually.

Most travel websites allow you to set alerts so you'll be notified when prices change.

This is especially useful if you're considering multiple destinations and waiting for the best deal.

3. Check Airport Transfer Costs Before Booking

That bargain hotel can suddenly become a lot less attractive when the taxi from the airport costs £120 each way.

Before booking:

  • Check transfer times

  • Compare taxi costs

  • Look at public transport options

  • Consider car hire if exploring the area

  • If you do hire a car, arriving after their office

has closed for the day can often mean an extra charge for pick up

Sometimes paying slightly more for a better location works out cheaper overall.

4. Don't Forget Travel Insurance

It's probably the least exciting part of holiday planning, but one of the most important.

Book your insurance as soon as you've booked your trip.

That way you're covered if unexpected events affect your holiday before you've even travelled.

5. Pack Outfits, Not Clothes

One of the easiest ways to avoid overpacking is to plan outfits rather than throwing random items into a suitcase.

Ask yourself:

  • What will I wear for breakfast?

  • What will I wear during the day?

  • What will I wear in the evening?

Choose pieces that work together and can be worn multiple times.

Your back (and airline baggage allowance) will thank you.

6. Roll, Don't Fold

Rolling clothes saves space and often reduces creasing.

Packing cubes can also make it easier to organise:

  • Daywear

  • Evening outfits

  • Swimwear

  • Underwear

  • Children's clothing

No more emptying the entire suitcase to find one pair of shorts.

7. Keep Essentials in Your Hand Luggage

Even if you're checking bags, always keep the important items with you.

This includes:

  • Passport

  • Travel documents

  • Medication

  • Phone charger

  • A change of clothes

  • Swimwear (if heading somewhere sunny)

If your luggage takes an unexpected detour, you'll be glad you did.

8. Research More Than Just the Hotel

Some of the best holiday experiences happen outside the resort.

Before you travel:

  • Save restaurant recommendations

  • Check local markets

  • Look for hidden beaches

  • Research local events

  • Book popular attractions in advance

A little local knowledge can transform a good holiday into a great one.

9. Leave Some Space in Your Itinerary

You don't need every minute planned.

Some of the best memories come from discovering a tucked-away restaurant, stumbling across a local festival or spending an extra afternoon by the pool.

Leave room for spontaneity.

10. Let Someone Else Handle the Details

Planning a holiday can quickly become a part-time job.

Flights, accommodation, transfers, restaurant bookings, excursions, insurance, passports, airport parking... the list never seems to end.

At Melz & Co., we help take the stress out of travel planning by managing the details for you, so you can focus on the exciting part - enjoying your holiday.

Because your holiday should feel relaxing long before you board the plane.
